MAGAZINE WRITING
In 1989, Ben wrote a short story called You Wouldn't Read About it, about surfing in the Basque country of Spain. He submitted the story to Surfer Magazine, they ran it and then hired him as an editor.
Ben worked at Surfer from 1989 to 1998 and brainstormed, wrote and edited 150 issues of that magazine. Perhaps the most important story he wrote was Cold Sweat, which exposed Mavericks to the world - a big deal at the time.
Since leaving Surfer, Ben has written for a wide variety of magazines and periodicals, including Malibu Magazine, LA Weekly, Surfers Journal, Fly Fish Journal, Nalu Japan, Men’s Health, SUP the Mag, Standup Journal and Standup Paddle Magazine.
From 2015 to 2017, Ben was in Hawaii, working as the editor of Standup Paddle Magazine and Samata Magazine.
As of September 2018, Ben is back in Santa Cruz, enjoying the fall weather, hoping to see someone he recognizes and working on a variety of projects for MERGE4, EnVont, The Local Malibu and a couple of books.
